15 BEST BONESAUCE SONGS EVER!!! -- Part III

And now the moment you've all been waiting for, the top five songs of the 15 BEST BONESAUCE SONGS EVER!!!

05 Thru 01

05.

SONG: Grass Is Greener
ALBUM: Fantasic Four

In my mind, Grass Is Greener was the blueprint for the alt pop sound that has since dominated the BS catalogue. This song has been the launching pad for a lot of popular BS tunes, from Whatever to Pictures Of Me On The Internet to Dots Make Lines / Lines Make Sound. And it's impact continues to loom large.

04.

SONG: (This Song Ain't No) SO
ALBUM: Chimp Jerk Fling

I consider SO to be an update of Bag O Chips, and while Chips made the list, SO outdoes it by a mile. The clever rock posturing lyrics, pounding bass, metal guitar licks all over place and, of course, the "Sex, Drugs anna Rock N Roll" chant makes this tune RAWK without being another nostalgic exercise in ROCK.

03.

SONG: People People What Do You Want Reprise
ALBUM: Chooklyn

The People Reprise is what all of the songs on the Chooklyn album are building up to. While it's certainly epic in length, it's not your typical "epic" rocker. In fact, the song is almost an album in itself, with a lot of layers that force repeated listenings. It's sad, angry and excited all at the same time. It's our best closer and it tops the original People.

02.

SONG: (Gonna Rock It Like) Ace Frehley
ALBUM: Ace EP

While the edit is listener friendly, the original is the defining mix. It's a simple song, but it's also the tune that kicked off a new era for BS. It's the foundation of both the Chimp Jerk Fling and Chooklyn albums. And not only is it all that, it also rocks and you can shake your booty to it. Also the best use of a keyboard on a BS song ever.

01.

SONG: Happy Holidays
ALBUM: Cutie Demo

I used to be surprised that a hateful break-up song disguised as a Christmas carol would also be our most poular tune. But I now understand why this song continues to be the pinnacle of the BS catalogue. It's good in all the right places, soft opener, bombastic ending and a lot of spiteful, but singable lines smushed inbetween. The update is good, but it's only good because the original was so damn fantastic.

15 BEST BONESAUCE SONGS EVER!!! -- Part II

To recap, I'm reviewing "THE 15 BEST BONESAUCE SONGS EVER!!!" And I can say without hyperbole that this selection of songs are the greatest songs Bonesauce has recorded, EVER! In the second part, we see two selections from Chooklyn, a smattering of booze drenched odes to alcohol and one more (and final) BS instrumental.

Again, I selected this list and did not consult with the other members of the band. And also, if you want to listen to any of these songs, simply select the music tab at the top of the page. Enjoy!

10 Thru 06

10.

SONG: You'll Be My Pillow
ALBUM: Chooklyn

This drink inspired tune is an ode to the morning after a hard night out, where our protaginist wants nothing more than to lie with his girl and dose off. This song had been kicked around and recorded in a number of different ways, but I think the BS version is the definitive mix. Everything works, the sluggish bass licks, the too bright guitar strums and my half asleep vocals.

09.

SONG: Death I Hear Ya Callin'
ALBUM: Dewitt Sings The Songs Of Bone Sauce

The other drink inspired song to make the list, this time a cliched glorification of hard livin' and hard drinkin', Death is a merger of prog and blues, with a tinge a metal thrown in for good measure. Justice's Sonica work shines under Bram's surprising musical restraint. Without doubt, this is BS's best epic rocker to date.

08.

SONG: The Theme To Bucky Starlark
ALBUM: Fantasic Four

The last of the instrumentals to make the list, this is a dirty little rocker that is dripping with the lowest of lo-fi. It's sloppiness is probably helped by the fact that I'm playing the guitar riff and Bram is playing the drums. It's a fitting theme for a low budget film that does not exist.

07.

SONG: Love Me
ALBUM: Cutie Demo

This song is the pinnacle of the BS Golden Age, which is defined as after Baker quit and before Pat left. It is awash with grunge influences, but also starts to highlight some of touches that would continue to define the Sauce Sound, from the upbeat and slight bridge to sludgier riffs, both of which would dominate our music under Chris Cassell, see Mellow.

06.

SONG: Dots Make Lines / Lines Make Sound
ALBUM: Chooklyn

While this song is brand spanking new, it's also an instant classic in the Bonesauce catalogue. Not only that, it rocks well. The lyrical structure is more poetic, but the influence, recording at 6ft. Studios, is easily understood. In my opinion this may be the most infectious pop riff that Bram has ever written.

15 BEST BONESAUCE SONGS EVER!!! -- Part I

I figured since Bonesauce has been together since 1991, that was about time we pulled a VH1 and compiled a "best of" list for the band. I considered many topics, such as Bonesauce's Top 10 Stinkiest Moments (No. 1, "You made me eat those eggs!"), Justice's Top 25 Hair Styles (No. 1, Feathered Mullet) or Top 20 Band Mascots (No. 1, Nappy the Napkin or Dewitt (tie)). However, in the end I decided on the instaclassic "BEST SONGS EVER" List. I should add that all of these songs were selected by me and me only. I did not consult with the other members of the band and I wholly (and hopefully) expect that they will respond angryily and amusingly. So without further fanfare I give you the 15 BEST BONESAUCE SONGS EVER!!! (Please note: all songs listed can be enjoyed by going to our fabulous music page.)

15 Thru 11

15.

SONG: If I Ran The Circus (2008)
ALBUM: Ace EP

While reimaging old tunes can sometimes produce mixed results, the Circus remix on the Ace EP made this BS classic only better. It keeps all of the lo-fi quirkiness while adding a touch of gloss, making the updated version become the only version.

14.

SONG: (Now Yer Messin' With) A Bag Of Chips
ALBUM: Chimp Jerk Fling

The first of many faux rock posturing tunes by BS. This one set the standard for our perfect mixture of alt rock apathy, swamp rock boogie and glam metal guitar. And it also sports the best use of a drunken Boston accent since Ted Kennedy.

13.

SONG: White Pussy's Theme
ALBUM: Chooklyn

This surf inflicted guitar rocker has everything you'd ever want from a theme song if you were an evil villian looking to dominate the world and destroy Bucky Starlark: manical laughter, thrashing guiatr solos and general plotting and scheming.

12.

SONG: Lust
ALUBM: Cutie Demo

This song is close to my heart, seeing as it was three years in the making. It's got all the angst required of a 90s tune, and yet it still holds as a heartfelt love song. The guitar work easily matches the screaming (and cracking) vocals that carry the song throughout.

11.

SONG: Chimp Jerk Fling
ALBUM: Chimp Jerk Fling

It started out as an exercise in noise and more noise, because of my own strained vox and Justice's effects driven bass, and turned into the song that defined the CJF album and the current working style of the band. Bram's solid production work created a loud noisefest that you can also dance to.

TOMORROW: 10 Thru 5 of the BEST BONESAUCE SONGS EVER!!!

Chooklyn Is Here! -- The Final Chapter

CHOOKLYN DOWNLOAD

People People What Do You Want Reprise

Well we've made it all the way to the last song on the album, People People What Do You Want Reprise. (Chooklyn also features some hidden gems tacked on at the end, but you gotta get your hands on a CD if you want those.) This download is the epic, angst-driven reprise of the original People People What Do You Want. But don't let the title fool ya, the reprise is pretty much a different song. There's more sampling, more guitar and more eff bombs. The only constant between the two are the lyrics. Heck, I think Bram may have used some different vocals from the original version as well. I know I'm in the band, so I got nothing but praise for what we do, but I can say without hyperbole that the reprise is the perfect ending to the dark pop confection that is Chooklyn.

So don't waste time downloading the album from the blog, because once they're gone that's it. And next week we return to our regular posting of wacky band photos, old junk and other delights.

Chooklyn Is Here! -- Part X

CHOOKLYN DOWNLOAD

Where Do Records Go When They Die

This gooey gummy pop rocker would sound perfect on Grey's Anatomy, except for the fact that the lyrics are about farts, feathered hair and VHS tapes. Each main vocal section is a tribute to some piece of old Bone Sauce media I own. The "eggs" line is reference to a live practice tape where during the session some fog is spread, causing Bram to curse my name. I responsed to this by stating, "Hey! You made me eat those eggs." This is because before early practices Bram and I would often grab some fast food breakfast meal. One time he recommended I get the eggs, which he later regretted. The feathered hair line is about our bassist, who has had many different and awesome styles of hair. I am using poetic license when I comment that there's a photo I no longer own. I still own plenty of examples of Justice's awesome 90's hair. The Mole and The Judas refers to an old song we used to do. "Eddie Van Dutchboy" refers to an old VHS tape of the band where someone yelled out to Bram, calling him "Eddie Van Dutchboy." This was because of A) his guitar playing skills and B) his dutchboy haircut at the time. The Freedumb line is reference to the epic songs that BS used to do, which would often last way past the eight minute mark. Freedumb, which is on the Fantasic Four album, opened with me singing some lyrics in Spanish. To this day I still get abused for my poor pronunciation of Spanish in this song. I guess I'd claim that this song is our remake of Andrew Lloyd Weber's Memories, only no one actually remembers any of this stuff.

CHOOKLYN DOWNLOAD

Disco(M)Fort

We recorded this organ-laden, fuzz-infused garage metal rocker across two different recording sessions in Brooklyn. I really got nuthin on the lyrics. The original idea was to record a bunch of rock posturing nonsense as a dance tune, but then when I went back into the studio to record more lyrics I added some lines about the continued ignorance concerning the abuse of others. You know, the torture and the war and all the other crap we're dealing with currently. I'm not sure whether the message came off, but it's sort of an update on H.F.P.I from the Fantasic Four album.

This short ditty was recorded with assistance from PT Bone Sauce collaborator Roy Park.
Chooklyn Is Here! -- Part VII

CHOOKLYN DOWNLOAD

Special K & Mary Jay

OK I screwed up putting together the song list for Chooklyn. The original title for Special K & Mary Jay was Not Another Karaoke Song, but during the mix down of the album I got so used to calling this song Special K & Mary Jay that I automatically wrote down that title instead of the real title. To make things more confusing, this song started out as Enjoy The Fog. But then I used those lyrics for Enjoy The Fog for a different tune, so we had the music but no lyrics.

So this song is about a dive that Bram and I went to in Chicago after a recording session for Chooklyn. The bar had cheap beers and bad karaoke. When we got there the place was kinda empty, but there were a few people around. At the front of the bar there was this big fat guy running karaoke who looked exactly like John Popper from the Blues Travelers before he got his stomach stapled. To get the crowd "warmed up" he would sing Blues Travelers songs off-key. The only other people singing was this duo calling themselves Special K and Mary Jay, who were also singing off-key. Anyone who came into this place would sit down for like a second and then walk back out because their singing was so loud and so horrendously wrong. So at one point Special K and Mary Jay started singing "Before He Cheats" by Carrie Underwood. Special K took the song to a whole new level. Instead of singing about bashing the car of her cheatin' boyfriend, she was going to kill her beau's mistress. At that point they were so loud and off-key that the entertainment value for us completely disappeared. So we drank up and split. So this is a lasting tribute to the drunk off-key train wrecks that were Special K and Mary Jay.

Chooklyn Is Here! -- Part VI

CHOOKLYN DOWNLOAD

You'll Be My Pillow

This song started out as I'll Be Your Pillow, in reference to the Velvet Underground's I'll Be Your Mirror. But on the day I was writing the lines I was rather hung over, so I instead of having me being someone's pillow, I wrote the lines that I wanted someone else (my girl) to be my pillow. I just wanted to lie there and do nothing but be hung over.

Bram recorded this song back in the mid 1990s, which was at that time titled Buy Me A Joke. He wrote the song with an old drummer, who also wrote the original lyrics and sung the song. During the recording sessions for Chimp Jerk Fling Bram dusted off the music for this song and asked me to write some new lyrics. I never did get around to writing the lyrics during that session, but Justice did lay down some bass.

During the Chooklyn sessions I finally wrote new lyrics, keeping only one line from the original song, which was "Halloween candy on the Fourth of July / That's where I'm at." I felt it fit with well with the whole stale and burntout concept of the new lyrics. All in all I really like this song and its whole Get Up Kids vibe.

Chooklyn Is Here! --- Part V

CHOOKLYN DOWNLOAD

White Pussy's Theme

White Pussy is part of an ongoing project that BS works on from time to time, the creation of a motion picture soundtrack for a movie that doesn't exist. The movie's main character is Bucky Starlark, who is a Bond type secret agent. You can listen to the first song from this faux soundtrack, Theme To Bucky Starlark, on our music archive page. It's on the Fantasic Four album. In any case, White Pussy is a Goldfinger type character who is interested in the usual bad guy stuff, world domination and killing Agent Starlark. The inspiration for White Pussy's Theme was a mix of Shaft's Theme by Isaac Hayes (R.I.P) and Flash Gordon by Queen.

Where'd the name White Pussy originate? Well during the recording of the song there was some cat food sitting around (to feed the studio cat) and it featured a real fancy pants white kitty on the box. It didn't really have much impact until Bram also started doing a rather fey "meow" imiation to go along with the picture. (I have a photo somewhere capturing the merger between cat food box and Bram's meow. Maybe I'll post that snap next week.) Together, cat food box and "meow," inspired me to adlib the lyrics and dialog for the song. I wrote the original music, which Bram quickly erased and then added his own twangy Pixies-influenced surf rock background. For me, this is the most amusing song on the album.
